Leading Change
Leading change is a key capability for effective leadership. A number of factors contribute to an individual’s success as a leader of change. You should pay attention to whether the change is being imposed upon you from the outside; whether you are initiating change or responding to a change that already is taking place in your organization. There are other factors as well. They include but are not limited to:
- Understanding your own and others reactions to change
- Allowing time for others to ask questions and express their concerns, fears, or excitement about an anticipated change
- Taking the time to provide answers where you have them, dispel rumors where possible and to explain the processes in place to address the changes which are underway or expected
- Being aware of and prepared for the predictable problems that occur during most any change
- Being willing and able to deliver timely and effective communications to others – whether direct reports, peers, more senior leadership, customers, vendors, etc.
- Keeping your workforce focused and productive in the face of uncertainty
- Being forthright yet sensitive in the delivery of ‘bad’ news
